TRAVEMÜNDE, GERMANY-(20-7-2003) More than 3000 sailors from 25 nations sail from Friday, July 18 until July 27, in the 114th edition of the Travemuende Week.
The first winners are already announced: Martin Moritz won in the mistral one-design class in great style and the team Axel Reinsch/Oliver Marquardt dominated the 14-footer fleet. The keelboats ended their racing today, too. The blistering heat caused some see breeze in the afternoon and the other fleets continued sailing until the early evening.
The next days the scene in Travemuende will even heat up: several European an World championships are held within the Travemuende Week: Hobie 14 (Worlds), 29er (Euro), Sportsboats (Euro), Musto Skiff (Euro), Hobie Tiger (Euro-Cup), Hobie FX One (Euro Cup).
Travemuende - The 20-year old Moritz Martin surfed unaffected from the 21 challenging men and women and scored five firsts in seven races. From the beginning on he dominated the fleet and André Hartung (22) had to accept second place with five points behind. While Silver medallist Amelie Lux was not surfing, her national competitor Romy Kinzl showed, that she could cope with the mixed fleet. After a first in the last race she overtook Richard Stauffacher from Swiss and won “bronze”.
In the fast 14-footer class the favourites clearly showed their strength from the beginning. Reinsch/Marquardt ended seven of their eleven races in front of the fleet, and the 26- and 27- year olds truly deserved the victory.
Peter Roocks and Ole Klinger secured a second without doubt and had a lot of points to the winners as also to the team behind, with Ralf Meier and Jan Witte following as third in the fleet of 15 boats.
The best offshore sailors from Friday and Saturday could not loose their lead today and where celebrated winners of the Travemuende Week, today. Race officer Andreas Stülcken tried to start a race, despite the unstable and slow winds, but had to abandon the race after a 180 degrees wind shift. In the class IMS I Jens Kellinghusen showed with his IMX 45 “Varuna” that he cannot only sail 3600 miles across the Atlantic but sail fast around the buoys, too. His latest success was the 12. place in the DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge.
The OSC I class went to Eric Wolf from Kiel with “Bubetti”
